hof castleA visit to his summer residence – the Palace Hof – shows us his incredible lust for luxury. Anyone who has seen the rooms and the gardens will no longer be impressed by the villa of a contemporary billionaire. The conqueror of the Turks, Prince Eugene, celebrated his legendary summer parties here.
Less decadent but full of history is the alternate destination: the Castle of Eckartsau, where the last Austrian Emperor Charles I.  "renounced participation" in state affairs which was the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Palace Hof. This magnificent castle is located in Marchfeld, approximately one hour's drive from Vienna and extends to over more than 50 hectares. The complex of stately apartments, an exquisite terrace garden and an idyllic manor was the ideal location for Prince Eugene's feudal parties. The Palace Hof is a unique Baroque artistic creation built by the famous architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The magnificent noble seat was extensively restored in 2005 and so we can visit a Baroque garden as well as the castle.

eckartsau castleThe Castle of Eckartsau. Nestled in the National Park "Donauauen", the former royal hunting lodge Eckhartsau is located in a 27 acre landscaped garden which is currently being rebuilt according to the original old plans. Francis Stephen of Lorraine, the husband of Maria Theresa, bought it in 1760. It also belonged to other nobles such as the Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the throne) and Austria's last emperor, Karl I. who "renounced participation" in state affairs here. We will visit the garden and the carefully restored castle from inside.
