THE WACHAU VALLEY

Here the Danube riverwinds its way past charming old villages and steep vineyards. Here are the most fantastic monasteries of Austria such as Melk Abbey and Göttweig Abbey. This is where high society went on holiday in the last century. And here we find the best wines together with culinary delicacies. And here Richard the Lionheart was kept captive.

The Wachau valley is full of myths and legends and today it is an extraordinary landscape along the Danube river. A top address among popular destinations for a day out. We are going to visit the following highlights:

mauterndorf_wachauKrems and Stein.The two trading towns from the Middle Ages – now united into one community – are the gateway to the famous Wachau valley, one of the most spectacular valleys in Europe and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This region is about 30 km long and is considered a work of art due to its beautiful terraces which are covered with vineyards, its charming villages, its magnificent monasteries and romantic castles. The bus stops at the beginning of the pedestrian zone of Krems. The walk leads through winding streets with historic houses towards Gozzo Castle, an impressive mansion from the 13th century. You will hear interesting things about the 1000 year old city and its central theme: premium wines.

Melk Abbey or Göttweig Abbey. We will visit one of the two famous Benedictine monasteries as they are the most splendid baroque sacred buildings in goettweig - paul trogerthe country. We will tell you about the life of Saint Benedict and why he founded the Order of the Benedictines. We will show you one of these fantastic monasteries and inform you about the power of the abbeys in the past and about the life of the monks.

Duernstein. The place where the English king and crusader, Richard the Lionheart, was captured on his way home in order to extort a huge ransom. We will walk through the little town with its medieval and baroque charm. You also have the opportunity to relax in one of the romantic wine taverns overlooking the Wachau valley. In the late afternoon we will return to Vienna.
