THE SECESSIONISTS

If you have a preference for Viennese Art Nouveau, then this tour is the right choice. The Art Nouveau movement was called the Secession in Austria (a group of Austrian artists had resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists; this movement included painters, sculptors and architects). We'll tell you the story of this revolution in the art scene and show you the magnificent buildings of this period. You learn interesting stories about big names such as Joseph Maria Olbrich, Gustav Klimt, Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann.

The highlights there: the Musikverein, (where every year the famous Vienna New Year's Concert is held at the Golden Hall), the Technical University and the famous Metro stations designed by the architect Otto Wagner (one of them houses the Otto Wagner Museum).

The Secession. It is one of the key works of Viennese Art Nouveau architecture. Gustav Klimt had a decisive influence on the design of the Secession. His Beethoven Frieze – originally created for an exhibition – can be seen in the basement. Then we drive along the Wiental where we will admire the elegant Otto Wagner Houses at numbers 38 and 40. Passing the palace of Schönbrunn, after a short while we arrive at the last stop of our tour located in the Vienna Woods: the former residence of Otto Wagner (now called Fuchs Villa).

The mansion is currently owned by the contemporary painter Ernst Fuchs, who has had it extensively renovated. It houses the Ernst Fuchs private museum with paintings and art objects from the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Now you have the rare opportunity to see an Otto Wagner building in Art Nouveau style from the inside.
