church - klosterneuburg abbeyThe monastery possesses the best work of art from the Middle Ages: the "Verdun Altar" which is named after Nikolaus von Verdun, the artist who created this grandiose jewel in enamel and gold at the end of the 12th century. The abbey was founded in 1114 by Margrave Leopold III, a saint, who found his last resting place under the altar.
Emperor Charles VI. added baroque elements after the model of the Spanish Escorial.

The result was a fantastic Sala Terrena which serves today as a starting point for guided tours through the different halls and rooms of the monastery such as: the Sacred Path – visit to the abbey church with the gigantic baroque organ, the Verdun Altar the Imperial Path – visit to the imperial apartments the Wine Culture Path – takes you four stories below into the baroque wine cellar.

Proposal: The abbey houses the oldest and largest wine-growing estate in Austria and offers wine tastings and wine sales in the wine shop of the abbey.
